History of Dharura

Our work began in 2018 with a Global Emergency Care partnership between the Bristol Royal Infirmary Emergency Department and Laikipia County in Kenya, built around ethical and well governed Global Emergency Care Fellowship opportunities for health professionals, receiving formal Global Health training, then gaining practical experience within an established partnership. As the partnership continues to thrive, we now support a wide range of hospital and community projects, and engage with the wider Global Health community to improve the provision of, and effective access to emergency care globally. This led to the formation of the Dharura charity in 2022, allowing us to manage the governance of partnerships between our volunteers and healthcare institutions.

While the heart of Dharura’s activities remain in Kenya currently, we engage with other international organisations and programs globally.

By 2024, Dharura has deployed over 100 UK and Kenyan volunteers, raised over £600,000 in funding, and gained an international reputation for ethical and progressive Global Health activity.
